Frequently Asked Questions – General

Is Recycle That a nonprofit organization? Are the items I drop into the collection box tax-deductible?
Recycle That is a for-profit business. Each collection box is associated with a Community Partner that is paid for items collected. While some of the Community Partners are charitable organizations and will issue receipts for donated items, receipts cannot be issued for donations dropped into a Recycle That collection box.

back

Why should I give my items to you if you’re a for-profit company?
The items are donated to the Community Partner.  Recycle That is a for-profit company that purchases the items from the community partner and is able to find uses for your used items. We provide a convenient way for you to recycle your items, giving them new life, rather than sending them to the landfill. Our collections support local community organizations. Each time a collection box fills up, we pay the community partner, referenced on each box, for each item collected. To find a collection box for a particular community partner, visit the Locate A Box page of our website.

back

What areas are covered by your free pick-up service?
While we do not provide front door pick-up services, we are expanding our collection box locations throughout the areas we serve.  Please visit the Locate A Box page of our website to find a collection box location that best suits your needs.  We are seeking new locations for collections boxes.  Please contact us if you have a location you would like us to include in our expansion.

back

What do you accept for recycling?
We accept clothing, shoes, backpacks & purses, accessories such as belts, hats & scarves, bedding, bath & linens, books, CDs and DVDs.  Please do not leave other items that are not listed.  Out of respect for the property owners that have agreed to host a collection box, please do not leave any items outside the collection box.

back

What happens to the items you collect?
Items collected are sorted to determine the best possible use for each item. Clothing and accessories in usable condition are typically sent in bulk overseas and sometimes sold domestically for reuse. Books, CDs and DVDs in good condition are sent to the secondary book market for reuse.  Some items, including clothing, bedding, bath & linens, are recycled for new uses such as industrial wipe clothes. As a last resort, items are recycled to recover the basic metals and fibers for use in newly manufactured products. By dropping your unused items in the collection box, you are reducing the number of items sent daily to local landfills.

How do I find a collection box?
Recycle That is expanding our collection box locations throughout the areas we serve. Visit the Locate A Box page of our website to find a location near you. We are seeking new locations for collection boxes.  Please contact us if you have a location you would like us to include in our expansion.  Items must fit into the collection box chute. Please do not leave items outside the collection box, out of respect for the property owners that have agreed to host a collection box.

back

Can I get back an item I put into a collection box?
Once you have dropped an item into a collection box, we are unable to return it. Please make certain you intend to give away an item before dropping it in the collection box. Because our collection boxes are only emptied when they are completely full, your item mixes in with hundreds of other items. Once the items reach our warehouse they are sorted to determine the best possible use and are packaged with hundreds of other similar items making it impossible to locate any one specific item.
